The short version
Tally measures how you use your Mac so you can set limits and understand your time. Everything stays on your Mac. Tally has no account, no server, no analytics and no advertising. We do not collect, receive, sell or share any of your data, because it never leaves your computer.
What Tally records
Tally stores the following on your Mac only, so it can show your usage and enforce your limits:
- Apps you use: the name and identifier of the app in front, and when you started and stopped using it.
- Whether you were active: Tally notices when you last pressed a key or moved the pointer, so it can count active time and ignore idle time. It does not record what you type or where you click.
- Websites you visit: the address, page title and time spent for the front tab in Safari and Google Chrome. Private and incognito windows are never recorded.
- Your settings: limits, projects and their rules, Focus presets, break and shortcut preferences, the weekly challenge and its results.
- Your passcode, if you set one: stored only as a salted one-way hash. Tally cannot read it back.
Tally does not read your messages, documents, files, photos, contacts, calendar, location or screen contents.
Where the data is kept
All of it is stored in Tally's private storage on your Mac (its app container and a shared container used by Tally's own widgets and Safari extension). It is not uploaded, backed up by us, or synced anywhere by Tally. If you back up your Mac with Time Machine or iCloud, your system settings decide whether Tally's files are included.
Permissions Tally may ask for
Each is optional and you can change it at any time in System Settings.
- Notifications: to warn you before a limit, and to tell you when Focus, a break or a challenge starts or ends.
- Automation (Safari, Google Chrome):* so Tally can read the front tab's address and redirect a blocked site. Tally only talks to the browsers you allow.
